Halal and tayyib in the Quran
Several verses join the two words. In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:168), people are told to eat from what is on the earth, lawful and good. The same pairing appears in Al-Ma'idah (5:88) and An-Nahl (16:114). Halal sets the boundary; tayyib asks whether what's inside the boundary is actually good for you.
What tayyib means for packaged food
Scholars describe tayyib broadly: food that is pure, wholesome, and free from harm. For packaged food, two practical signals are how nutritious it is and how heavily it's processed. A candy bar with no doubtful ingredients can be halal while being high in sugar and ultra-processed.
How Mutahhir estimates tayyib
Mutahhir uses two public scoring systems:
- Nutri-Score grades nutrition from A (best) to E, based on sugar, salt, saturated fat, fiber, protein, and fruit and vegetable content.
- NOVA groups food from 1 (unprocessed) to 4 (ultra-processed).
These are useful signals, not a complete definition of tayyib, which also includes things no label measures, such as how food was produced.
How Mutahhir handles it
Every scan shows the halal screening result together with Tayyib health information, so a product with no doubtful ingredients but poor nutrition is still visible as a less wholesome choice.
Common questions
Is all halal food tayyib?
Not necessarily. Halal describes what is permitted; tayyib describes what is good and wholesome. Highly processed, high-sugar food can be halal without being tayyib.
What is NOVA group 4?
NOVA group 4 is the ultra-processed category: industrial formulations with ingredients and additives you wouldn't use in home cooking, such as soft drinks, packaged snacks, and many ready meals.
