Ingredients that depend on the source
The ingredient can be halal or not. The label doesn't say which, so a halal certification, a stated source, or the manufacturer can settle it.
- Is gelatin halal?Pork gelatin isn't halal, fish gelatin is widely accepted, and plain "gelatin" doesn't say which.
- Is E471 halal? An emulsifier made from plant oils or animal fat, including pork fat. Labels rarely say which.
- Are natural flavors halal? Can come from plants or animals and is often carried in alcohol. US labels don't have to say.
- Are enzymes and rennet halal? Can come from pigs, calves, microbes, or plants. Common in cheese and baked goods.
- Is L-cysteine (E920) halal?A dough conditioner made from feathers, human hair, pig bristles, or fermentation.
- Is glycerin (E422) halal? Can be made from plant oils, animal fat, or synthetically. Vegetable glycerin is halal.
